The Lanyard and Your Dog

Pet sites often list all the required items that you should have prior to bringing a puppy home. One item that should be on this list is the lanyard. The lanyard can be both a training tool and a pet walking helper.

If you live in the city and own a dog you are probably aware of the issues. One thing that you may have already encountered is trying to walk with your dog down a busy side walk. Most leashes are six feet in length. This allows the dog a certain amount of freedom, but can be a problem if you are trying to navigate around people and poles. To make this part of the walk easier, loop a lanyard through your pet’s collar and create a quick traffic leash. This short leash will ensure that the dog remains right at your side at all times.

You are going to have to clean-up after your pet, f you are walking with your dog in and urban area. One way of ensuring that you always have the required items with you is by packing a pet pouch. This pouch can be filled with clean-up bags, disposable gloves and even a sanitary wipe or two. Keep the pouch in the same place that you keep your dog’s leash to ensure that you never forget to bring it along.

Many people do not get the chance to take their pet out until dark. If you are going to be out late with your pet, you should take along a flashlight. The light may be needed if you are walking in parks, or any area where the ground may be uneven. You should also make certain that you have your cell phone with you.

For the long walk or hike you would be well advised to carry water. Not just for you, but for the dog. Having an O ring on your lanyard will permit you to carry a bottle of water at all times. Alternatively, you can use the carbineer attachment, which can be hooked to virtually any kind of sports bottle. For the dog you can take a long a foldable water bowl.

When you are training your dog you can carry all your training supplies on a convenient lanyard. Your clicker, a drag line and even small food rewards can easily fit into a pouch.

Although, your pet may be well trained you may encounter other dogs while you are out walking. To ensure the safety of both you and your pet take along an animal repellent. Many repellents can be affixed to a lanyard.

Lanyards are inexpensive and convenient. Additionally, they can be used to carry more than one item at a time. Walking with your pet can be made more enjoyable by a bit of planning. Pack a lanyard before you head out.
